South Downs Way Day 7.
Another 15 miler today, courtesy of a 1 mile off route to the campsite, we laugh in the face of another mile 😆
Definitely a day of 2 halves.
Packed up and left our campsite to the sounds of wailing sirens on the main road outside the campsite, fire engines, police, ambulances and 2 lanes of stationary traffic, some poor lady over turned her car (she was out of the car so hopefully ok). In the confusion we completely forget to pick up supplies so had literally no food with us, and only 1 stop after 7.5 miles today.
Obvious there was a huge climb out of town, then we spent a lot of the day up in the clouds on top of the downs, fields to the left, the sea to the right in the distance, paths undulating, but thankfully most of them on grass.
Was pretty warm, 21c, and we stopped for energy gels after about 4 or 5 miles, cherry bakewell for Kim, raspberry ripple flavour for me, yummy.
At one point we also switched hemispheres, from West to East.
Unfortunately the energy gel only lasted a while, poor Kim was suffering with fatigue. After what must have seemed like a lifetime for Kim, we made lunch at YHA Southease after 7.75 miles.
Baked potato with tuna mayo and salad, and suddenly Kim was a transformed person! It’s been a tough week both physically and mentally, but suddenly, we both had renewed energy, and soon we were speeding along, and the miles clocked up. Was actually quite windy right up on top, and we almost put on another layer. What a difference a few days makes.
Warmed ourselves up with some cracking banana and toffee cake from the YHA, thoroughly recommended!
We did have to jump a fence at one point with a herd of cows sitting directly by the gate, and on the path, we didn’t fancy walking right next to them!
Some more 80s classics going, we eventually we rolled into Alfriston, but the only way to the campsite was through town adding another mile. Campsite is very busy, probably as many people as we have seen all week!!
Final day tomorrow..!
Thanks for all the lovely messages of support, it has really kept us going 😊
