The ~15 mile section of the South Downs Way from Amberley to Truleigh Hill is a stunning stretch featuring rolling chalk downs, river valleys, and breathtaking viewpoints. This route takes you from the Arun Valley, past historic landmarks like Chanctonbury Ring, and along dramatic ridgelines before reaching Truleigh Hill.

1. Amberley to Rackham Hill

  • Leaving Amberley, the trail climbs onto Rackham Hill, offering panoramic views over the Arun Valley.
  • This section features open grassland and rolling chalk ridges, with beautiful vistas in all directions.

2. Rackham Hill to Chanctonbury Ring

  • The route continues towards Washington, passing through fields and woodland.
  • A steady ascent leads to Chanctonbury Ring, an ancient hillfort surrounded by a mystical beech tree plantation.
  • The views from here stretch across the South Downs, the Weald, and even the sea on a clear day.

3. Chanctonbury Ring to Steyning Bowl

  • A gentle descent leads towards Steyning Bowl, a large natural amphitheater in the chalk downs.
  • The route here is wide and open, with stunning ridgeline views over the surrounding valleys.

4. Steyning Bowl to Truleigh Hill

  • The trail descends towards the River Adur, crossing at Botolphs near Upper Beeding.
  • A final climb leads up to Truleigh Hill, where there are expansive views of the Sussex Downs and coastline, and fingers crossed the YHA is open.
